Phil has worked in the IT industry for 25 years starting at Digital Equipment supporting Rdb. After spells working for European Support in Valbonne, France and for Rdb Engineering as a Mission Critical Support Engineer, he moved to Oracle in 1994 as part of the Product Management group of Server Technology. There he provided high level assistance and support to mission critical customers using Oracle Spatial, interMedia and Data Guard.

Then Phil worked for three years for JoraPh Consulting providing DBA services for customers on Oracle.

This included installation and configuration of Oracle RDBMS, RAC, Data Guard and Oracle Streams, performance tuning and healthchecks.

Subsequently Phil has worked for Atos Origin Consulting as a Senior Oracle DBA before his current role working as an independent consultant providing advice and assistance with Oracle Server RAC and Disaster Recovery implementation.

Phil has presented regularly at Oracle Special Interest Groups and Oracle User Group national conferences.

Seminar Overview:
 
  • This course will help you plan and implement a Disaster Recovery stategy for your Oracle database.
  • Often IT managers will ensure that the High Availability requirements of your database are met but what if your whole data centre is lost or unavailable.This seminar will talk about how to prepare and put in place an infrastructure to protect yourself from that eventuality.
  • It concentrates on the deployment of Oracle Data Guard which is Oracle's Disaster Recovery product that is included in Oracle RDBMS Server Enterprise edition.However in the introduction and strategy section it will discuss other possible methods of implementing Disaster Recovery.
  • The seminar will cover functionality from  9i, 10g and 11g versions of Oracle and will also identify where changes of functionality and syntax have changed in between version. It will also mention both implementing Data Guard with command line SQL, DGMRL and Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control.
Objectives:
  • Understand the need for Disaster Recovery(DR) and problems,methods involved in implementing it.
  • Learn how to plan to implement Oracle Data Guard and the steps involved in that implementation.
  • Understand the administrative requirements of a Data Guard implementation.
  • Learn how to do a switchover/failover from the primary site to the standby site and how to reinstate your DR configuration after this event.
  • Implement Data Guard so that the Standby Database can be used for alternative purposes such as read only applications
